教会历史

Founded in 1988

The history of Praise Lighthouse must begin here:
In 1988, God sent Rev. Kelvin Sim and his wife to start a purely English-speaking church (Living Hope Assembly) in a single-storey terrace house in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru. It was a church under the Assemblies of God Malaysia. Soon after, the church moved to the second floor of a shoplot on Jalan Persisiran Perling 1 as its gathering place.

1993–2012: Pioneering and Growth Phase

Five years later, the church was renamed Church of Praise, Taman Perling. The number of attendees kept growing, and Rev. Sim and the congregation began to develop a burden for the Mandarin ministry in Johor Bahru. In January 1993, God sent REV. Patrick Tan. He was a theology student from Kuala Lumpur's Faith Charismatic Centre studying at Tung Ling Bible School in Singapore. Under the arrangement of Rev. Luke Chan from Faith Charismatic Centre, he attended classes in Singapore during weekdays and served on weekends at Church of Praise. After five months of preparation, the first Mandarin gathering began on the first Sunday of May 1993 with just six people.
Two years later in 1995, Sunday attendance was around 35–40 people. By 1999, it grew to about 70. From 1993 to 1999, the average annual increase in Sunday attendance and baptisms was about 10 people. In the first 7–8 years, most attendees were aged 35–60. There were few people serving, and the worship ministry lacked musicians, relying heavily on help from the English congregation. Later, the pastoral focus widened to include the parents of English-speaking members, eventually shifting towards reaching the youth.
In 2001, Sunday attendance surged past 100, with many students, young adults, and young couples joining. By 2006, due to crowding during major events, the leadership and ministry team, after much prayer, stepped out in faith to launch a second Sunday service alongside the 9:30 AM one. On January 1, 2012, God miraculously provided a new venue at the PKK building, accommodating 700 people at a reasonable rent. With the larger space, attendance grew even faster. That year saw major breakthroughs: a fully Mandarin-speaking children's ministry was launched, and under the blessing of Rev. Michael Yeo (Church of Praise Bukit Indah, English), the church became administratively and pastorally independent, directly under the Assemblies of God. The church building project was also initiated that same year.

2014–2015: Revival and Multiplication Phase

In 2014, while waiting for the completion of the new building, the church temporarily relocated to a shoplot in Nusa Bestari for gatherings.
In October 2015, the new four-storey building was completed, and the church officially changed its name from “Church of Praise (Mandarin)” to “Praise Lighthouse A/G Church.” The dedication service was held on January 16, 2016. We thank the Lord for His guidance and blessings.
